Notoriously Bad Hair

11abs08 When I first saw this picture of Tori Spelling, I had to take a step back.  Damn, that is some bad hair.

It took me a few moments to get over my visceral reaction for me to realize exactly why I didn't like it.  The exact spot where she places the pigtails is the exact portion of her face that she doesn't want to draw attention to.  I don't want to say she has a horseface, but I also don't want to trust this girl around a box of sugarcubes.

By sectioning her hair like this, Tori is drawing attention to her short forehead, and long face.  The frizz, and terrible color doesn't help much either.  For a woman who spends so much of her father's money to improve her appearance via surgery, why doesn't she put some of that money towards a decent colorist?

But to be fair, I will say that I love her faux-reality show.  This gal may be fugger than money can fix, but she has a sense of humor about herself.  The scene where she flirts and twirls her hair, only to pull out a loose hair extension is priceless.  If you aren't watching So Notorious, you should be.

Britney Spears: Curler Chic

Britney_spears_hair_1 It's a good thing Sean Preston is too young to know shame, because I would have been mortified to be seen with my mother in curlers.

Britney is doing three things right here: 1) Baby has a hat to protect its precious scalp from the sun. 2) Holding baby with two hands. Let's hope the bodyguard is carrying her drink.  3) Setting your hair in curlers and letting it set for a period of time creates a longer lasting hairstyle.

But being seen in curlers is just tacky and trailer parkesque.  Look, I know everyone sets their hair from time to time, and Britney has the unfair predicament of ALWAYS being photographed.  But if you put your hair in a silk scarf, that will reduce frizz and cover up the curlers. Besides, it's the perfect opportunity to don a gorgeous piece like this Emilio Pucci Riflessi Silk Twill Scarf.

X-Men: Evolution of Storm's Hair

Storm_loadscreen I love comic book hair.  The shape, color, and movement are so over the top and adventurous, I don't even bother reading the geek-fantasy storylines, I just flip through the pages and look at the hair.

With the surge of comic book movies, it has been hard for film makers to translate comic book hair into their films.  There have been some forgettable and bland misteps like Kirsten Dunst's hair in Spiderman and Jessica Alba's hair in Fantastic Four.  But there have also been some seriously terrible attempts like Halle Berry's hair in Catwoman and Uma Thurman's hair in Batman and Robin.

Halle Berry also has some bad comic book hair in the X-Men movie franchise.  Not just one, but three different wigs have been used to try and recreate the long, snow white hair of Storm.  For those not familiar with the comic book, I will briefly explain Storm the best I can (since I never read the stories).  Storm is a mutant from Africa who can control the weather and fly.  Because of her meteorological powers, Storm is one lucky lady: she will never have a weather-induced bad hair day.  That's right - no humidity causing frizz, or rained on hairstyles.  She might not even need a hairdryer, if she decides to use a warm wind instead.

In the first X-men movie, I don't know what the hell they were thinking.  I despise baby bangs because they look like a botched haircut.  I don't care how chic and Hepburnesque you think you are, you just can't pull them off.  Ms. Berry herself had to lobby for a new wig for the second X-Men movie, and while it is an improvement, I was too distracted by the shellacked wigline and brassy grey to approve.  For the third X-men movie, I think the color is a definite improvment.  The salt and pepper lowlights are much more flattering - but it takes away from the comic fantasy version of storm.  It looks like it could be someone's everyday hairstyle, it isn't superhero hair; it's soccer mom hair.

They say this is the last X-men movie so, in theory, this could be the last live-action Storm hair we will ever see.  If this movie opens over $100 million, though, it will not be last bad Storm wig that we see.

Congratulations to Taylor Hicks!

Taylor Hicks is your American Idol

But more importantly, Taylor is my hair idol.  Why?  Because he does his very best with the hair that he naturally has - and for many people (including the millions who dye over their gray) that is a difficult thing to do.  Taylor's hair showed that he wasn't afraid to be himself.  Most entertainers are all made up to appear as young and hip as possible - but Taylor was comfortable being himself.  I think that appeals to people who are sick of cookie cutter pop stars.  His hair and his talent are authentic - and that is why he won.

Your move, Britney Spears.

Guess the Back of the Head: It's Jessica!

220400x600 Good ol' Ken Paves is always there to hang out with Jessica Simpson.  And kudos to PinkPiglet for identifying the back of hair chameleon's head.

Clay Aiken's New Hair

So should I even bother offering my commentary on this disaster?

Tara Reid: What Happened?

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Earlier this month, I saw these fantastic pictures of Tara Reid's hair at the TheSuperficial.com and I thought that for once in her booze-adled life Tara Reid got something right.  The color with the fantastic light brown lowlights looked natural, and the quality of the extensions was amazing.  Of course, I'm speaking in the past tense, because somehow Tara Reid showed up at Cannes this week with this:

I just don't understand what happened.  She went back to the bleach orange Pumkin-from-The-Flavor-of-Love haircut that showcases her booze bloated chin?  I feel disappointed and betrayed.  For a brief period of time, I thought all was right in the world of Tara Reid's hair - and now that belief has been destroyed.  I guess it was nice while it  lasted.

Mariah Carey's Madame Tussand Mishap

Mariah_carey_wig Congratulations Mariah Carey on your new wax figure on display!

Oh wait. . . that's actually her in the flesh?

Then why does her fake hair look like the same terrible quality you would find on an upscale mannequin in a tourist trap?

What grown woman would wear those immature teenage clips in her hair to give a speech at an evening function?

What kind of celebrity would allow their stylist to part their hair in that unflattering manner and then be photographed?

You would really have to be a deluded, narcissistic woman-child with a brain made out of wax to think that hairstyle looks good on you.  But then again, that's Mariah for you.

Kelly Osbourne: Wig or What?

Kellyosbourne2 I'm not quite sure what that thing is.  Is it a wig?  Is it extensions?  I'm leaning towards wig because of the way the hairline is hidden.

The style itself is almost flattering.  Kelly can pull off platinum hair and the assymetrical bob matches her daring and fun personality.  But I still really don't like this wig, and I can't quite put my finger on why it doesn't work.

Maybe it's because there is too just much hair and it overwhelms Kelly's face.  She might be trying to hide her trademark pudgy round face.  And any hairstyle that makes it look like you have something hide is just not flattering.
